Announcement of a Structural Health Monitoring Special Issue on “Structural Health Monitoring: A Value of Information Perspective”

Information gathered using Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems can substantially contribute to an enhanced performance of civil structures and other infrastructure, transportation, and machinery systems. SHM can provide a decision support improving benefit generation and reducing operational costs and risks throughout their life cycle. However, the performance and utility enhancement of technical systems by Structural Health Information (SHI) is often not or not consistently taken into consideration. This prevents a systematic quantification and demonstration of the value and impact of SHI, which may even lead to misdirecting the design and innovation of SHI systems.
The value of SHI can be quantified with the Bayesian decision analysis necessitating the modelling of decision scenarios involving (1) models of the technical system and SHI system life cycle performance and costs, (2) a model representing the decision maker’s objectives and (3) decision variables associated to the SHI systems and technical system performance management strategies. The quantification of the value of SHI provides the basis for a targeted SHI system development, design and innovation to optimize the benefit generation, costs and risks of technical systems.
With a special issue on the topic of “Structural Health Monitoring: A Value of Information Perspective”, the state across engineering disciplines and from science and industry for quantifying and optimizing the value of SHI will be gathered. Contributions and applications that cover, but are not limited to the following topics are welcome:
- Contributions of SHI/SHM to benefit and functionality enhancement of structures and technical systems
- Integration of SHM in procedures for risk assessment and emergency management,
- Industrial perspectives on the value of SHI/SHM
- Design and optimization of SHI/SHM systems for technical system operation
- Algorithms for the quantification of the value of SHM/SHI,
- Performance indicators for VoI assessment.
Contributions of scientists, consultants, operators in the fields of aviation, aeronautics, mechanical, and civil engineering and SHI system development are welcome.
